The Science of Detox
Authentic Panchakarma in Kerala
Panchakarma — the five-fold detoxification — is our medical speciality. Doctor-led, minimum 14 nights, in an NABH-accredited setting on the Chalakudy River.
Panchakarma is Ayurveda's ultimate clinical protocol for cellular detoxification. Rooted in ancient medical science, it is a five-stage process designed to identify the root cause of imbalance and eliminate deep-seated toxins (Ama) from the body.
What's Panchakarma
Rooted in the timeless principles of Ayurveda, Panchakarma is a profound experience that recognizes the unique composition of every individual, composed of the five fundamental elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Panchakarma treatments are scheduled after consultation with our Senior Ayurveda Doctor and usually starting from a minimum of 14 nights. We're glad to organise a pre-arrival call with our Senior Ayurveda Doctors to address your health concerns and prepare for your visit.
Restoring the Tridosha Balance
Your health is defined by the balance of three bio-energies: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When these are in equilibrium, you experience perfect health. When they are disturbed—by stress, diet, or lifestyle—disease manifests. Our Senior Physicians design your Panchakarma programme to target your specific Vikruti (current imbalance), clearing the channels and resetting your biological rhythm.
Tailored Panchakarma Experience
At Softouch Ayurveda Village, we recognize the intricacies of your constitution and the specific imbalances you may be experiencing. Our Panchakarma treatments are carefully customised to your unique needs, ensuring a comprehensive and personalised approach.
The five procedures
Panchakarma means "five actions", and the five are chosen — rarely all together — according to what your physician finds.
Vamana clears the upper channels, and is used chiefly where Kapha has accumulated: certain respiratory and skin conditions. Virechana, a supervised purgation, works on Pitta and is the procedure most often prescribed for metabolic, liver and skin concerns. Basti, a medicated enema, addresses Vata and is central to the treatment of spinal and joint conditions. Nasya delivers medicated oil through the nasal passage, and is used for conditions of the head, neck and sinuses. Raktamokshana, the letting of a small quantity of blood, is used selectively where the blood itself is considered involved.
Your programme may include one of these, or two, or none — your physician may prescribe a preparatory course instead. The choice follows the examination, not the brochure.
The three stages, and the length of the programme
Panchakarma unfolds in three stages. Purvakarma, the preparation, uses internal oleation and Swedana to soften the tissues and draw toxins toward the digestive tract. Pradhanakarma is the main procedure itself. Paschatkarma is the guided return to ordinary food, activity and routine, beginning with a carefully staged diet.
Each stage rests on the one before it. Preparation that is cut short leaves the main procedure with little to remove, and the closing stage is what allows the result to hold once you are home. For this reason our physicians begin a full Panchakarma only for stays of fourteen nights or more.
What Panchakarma is prescribed for
It is used for chronic inflammatory and rheumatoid conditions, digestive and metabolic disorders, spinal and joint pain, stress and burnout, and certain skin conditions. Your doctor will tell you what the programme is likely to change in your case and over what period. Improvement is usually gradual, and most guests notice it during the second week rather than the first.
When it is not advised
Panchakarma is not suitable during acute illness or pregnancy, and some cardiac and other conditions rule out particular procedures. Every guest is examined before a programme is agreed, and where Panchakarma is not appropriate our physicians will recommend a gentler course of treatment instead.
Shorter programmes
A seven-night stay suits a rejuvenation programme with daily therapy and consultation, and in the quieter months a three-night stay is available as an introduction to Ayurveda. Both include consultation, treatment and the full daily rhythm of the retreat. Neither is a Panchakarma course, and we describe them as what they are.
The Five Karmas
The five actions of Panchakarma.
After a detailed consultation, your physician prescribes which of these cleansing procedures your body needs — always preceded by preparation (oleation and sudation) and followed by rejuvenation.
Virechana (Purgation)
120–180 minA vital Panchakarma therapy that induces medicated purgation, strategically targeting the expulsion of excess Pitta dosha. It facilitates fat digestion — aiding weight loss — and purges toxins and surplus mucus from the small intestine, enhancing overall digestion.
Best for
Pitta disorders — digestive issues, liver health, hormonal imbalance.
Vamana (Emesis)
60–120 minAn ancient therapy focused on eliminating doshas through the upper channels (the mouth), by bringing Kapha and Pitta dosha to the Amashaya (stomach and duodenum) from all over the body.
Best for
Kapha disorders — asthma, allergies, skin conditions.
Nasya (Nasal Administration)
30 minA profound therapy administering medicines through the nasal route, providing a unique and effective approach to holistic well-being with a soothing effect on the nasal passages and sinuses.
Best for
Head & neck — migraines, sinusitis, sleep disorders.
Basti (Enema Therapy)
30–45 minA paramount treatment within shodhana, revered for addressing many diseases, especially vata disorders. It is categorised into asthapana / niruha basti (decoction-based) and anuvasana basti (oil-based).
Best for
Vata disorders — joint pain, arthritis, back pain, constipation.
Raktamokshana (Bloodletting)
30–45 minA crucial process of blood detoxification ('rakta' = blood, 'mokshana' = to release) involving the intentional release of impure or stagnant blood. Our therapists perform two types — Shastra visravana and Anushastra visravana — tailored to your needs.
Best for
Blood-related conditions — eczema, acute inflammation.
