Understanding the Quality Standard

The NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India (QCI). It serves as the apex national body responsible for establishing and operating stringent accreditation programmes for healthcare organisations across the country, aligning Indian healthcare with global quality standards.

NABH, QCI and AYUSH — what the difference actually is

These terms get used interchangeably in Ayurveda marketing, and they are not the same thing. It is worth knowing which is which before you choose where to be treated.

QCI — Quality Council of India. The national body for quality accreditation across Indian industry, set up jointly by the Government of India and industry associations. QCI does not accredit hospitals itself.

NABH — National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers. A constituent board of QCI, and the body that actually accredits healthcare organisations. So NABH is the healthcare arm; QCI is the parent. When a centre says it is "QCI certified", ask what that means — the meaningful healthcare accreditation is NABH.

AYUSH. The Government of India ministry responsible for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. AYUSH registration or a state classification is a licence to operate in the sector. It is not a quality accreditation, and it is not comparable to NABH.

The short version: an AYUSH licence says a centre is permitted to practise. NABH accreditation says its clinical processes, patient safety systems, medicine handling and therapist training have been independently audited against national healthcare standards. Most Ayurveda properties in Kerala hold the former. Comparatively few hold the latter.

How many Ayurveda centres in Kerala are NABH-accredited?

Fewer than most people expect. Kerala has hundreds of Ayurveda resorts, centres and clinics; only a small number have taken their operations through NABH hospital accreditation, because it audits the things guests never see — medicine preparation, sterilisation, record-keeping, physician qualification, emergency protocol.

The number changes as centres are accredited and as accreditations lapse, so rather than quote a figure that may be out of date, we would encourage you to check the current list directly with NABH at nabh.co, which publishes accredited organisations by state.

Is Softouch a hospital or a resort?

Both, and that is deliberate. It is an NABH-accredited Ayurveda hospital on an 18-acre riverfront estate, with twelve rooms. Every treatment is prescribed and monitored by qualified Ayurveda physicians — it is not a spa menu you choose from.

What does NABH accreditation change for me as a guest?

Your treatments are prescribed by registered Ayurvedic physicians rather than wellness consultants; medicines are prepared and stored to audited standards; therapists are trained to a documented protocol; and treatment plans are decided on clinical grounds, not commercial ones.

Is NABH the same as a state Green Leaf or Olive Leaf classification?

No. Those are Kerala Tourism classifications for Ayurveda centres, concerned largely with facilities and presentation. NABH is a national healthcare accreditation concerned with clinical safety.

When was Softouch accredited?

September 2025. Softouch Ayurveda itself was established in 1992; the Village opened in June 2023.

Does accreditation mean treatment is clinical and unpleasant?

No. It means what happens behind the scenes is rigorous. What you experience is an 18-acre riverfront estate, organic farm-to-table food, daily yoga and a deliberately small number of guests.
